Sloppy Joes
Sweet, savoury, and packed with hearty flavour, these homemade sloppy joes feature seasoned ground beef simmered in a rich, tangy sauce. Served on sourdough bread, they’re an easy, comforting dinner that’s perfect for busy weeknights and family meals.
Ingredients
- 2 Tbsp olive oil
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 red pepper, chopped
- Salt
- Pepper
- 4 cloves garlic, chopped
- 1 carrot, grated
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 Tbsp chili powder
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- 1 can (680 mL) tomato sauce
- 4 slices sourdough bread, toasted
- Parsley, chopped
- Lettuce, chopped
Directions
1 Heat 2 Tbsp oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add 1 onion and 1 pepper; season generously with salt and pepper; and cook, covered, for 7 minutes.
2 Add 4 cloves garlic and 1 carrot and cook for 2 minutes. Add 1 lb beef and cook until no longer pink, about 5 minutes. Sprinkle with 1 Tbsp chili powder and ¼ tsp cinnamon and cook for 1 minute.
3 Add can tomato sauce and simmer until beginning to thicken, about 3 minutes. Spoon beef mixture over toast and sprinkle with parsley and lettuce to serve.

Ingredients
- Olive oil
- 1 onion, chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, chopped
- 1 red pepper, chopped
- 1 cup corn
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 lb pork sausage, sliced
- 1 can (798 mL) crushed tomatoes
- 1 can (540 mL) kidney beans, rinsed and drained
- 1 can (398 mL) tomato sauce
- 3 chilies de arbol, ends trimmed and deseeded
- Basil
- Oregano
- Parsley
- Salt
- Pepper
- Mozzarella cheese, shredded
- Green onions, chopped
Directions
1 In a large saucepan, sauté 1 onion, 4 cloves garlic, 1 pepper, and 1 cup corn in oil until tender. Add 1 lb each of ground beef and pork sausage, and cook until no longer pink.
2 Stir in 1 can each of tomatoes, beans, and tomato sauce and 3 chilies. Add as much basil, oregano, parsley, salt, and pepper as you prefer. Bring to a boil and cook for about 10 minutes.
3 Remove chilies. Serve with cheese and green onions.
Hamburger Poutine
Crispy potatoes topped with savoury seasoned ground beef, and melty cheese make this hamburger poutine the ultimate comfort food. Hearty, cheesy, and full of flavour, it’s a delicious twist on a Canadian classic.
Ingredients
- 5 lbs yellow potatoes, sliced into fries
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- Seasoning salt
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 red pepper, chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, chopped
- 2 lbs ground beef
- Oregano
- Basil
- Parsley
- Salt
- Pepper
- Mozzerella cheese, chopped
Directions
1 Toss 5 lbs potatoes in ¼ cup olive oil and a generous amount of seasoning salt and bake at 350°F for 1 hour.
2 Meanwhile, in a large skillet on medium heat, saute an onion, a pepper, and 4 cloves of garlic until tender.
3 Add 2 lbs of ground beef, oregano, basil, parsley, salt and pepper and cook until meat is no longer pink.
4 Serve poutine style, with potatoes topped with meat mixture topped with cheese.
